Low vitamin D levels linked to metabolic syndrome

Posted by thomenda7xx on Thursday, August 27, 2009

Increasing blood levels of vitamin D are linked to a lower prevalence of the metabolic syndrome (obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol and diabetes), as well as improved ‘good’ cholesterol levels, says a new study.

According to findings published in the Journal of Clinical Lipidology, the lowest levels of the sunshine vitamin were associated with a 31 per cent prevalence of metabolic syndrome, compared to only 10 per cent for people with the highest average levels.

“Although previous surveys have also reported associations between low 25(OH)D concentration and metabolic syndrome components, to our knowledge, the present investigation is the first to report this finding in a sample with a high prevalence of vitamin D dietary supplement users in which frequencies of vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency were low,” wrote the researchers, led by Kevin Maki from Illinois-based Provident Clinical Research

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a condition characterized by central obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol and disturbed glucose and insulin metabolism. The syndrome has been linked to increased risks of both type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Study details

The researchers analyzed vitamin D levels in the blood of 257 men and women aged over 18. Dietary and supplementary intakes were assessed using a food frequency and dietary supplement questionnaires, said the researchers.

Their results showed that vitamin D blood levels were associated with HDL cholesterol levels.

“The most notable finding from the present study was the strong relationship between serum concentrations of 25(OH)D and HDL-C concentrations,” wrote the researchers.

“Each 10 ng/mL increment in 25(OH)D was associated with an increase of 3.8 to 4.2 mg/dL in HDL-C [...] This is of considerable potential importance given that each 1 mg/dL increment in HDL-C is associated with a 4 to 6 per cent reduction in coronary heart disease (CHD) risk.”

They also observed inverse associations between vitamin D levels and triglyceride levels, body mass index, and waist circumference, meaning that higher vitamin D levels were associated with lower values for these measurable s.

Explanation

“A potential explanation for our observation of an inverse association between 25(OH)D and indicators of adiposity (waist and body mass index) may be that vitamin D is fat soluble and is therefore easily sequestered in adipose tissue,” wrote the researchers.

“Thus, there is a greater storage capacity for vitamin D in overweight and obese individuals, which may result in a reduced circulating concentration of 25(OH)D.

“As a result, in order to maintain a given circulating 25(OH)D concentration, overweight and obese individuals may have to consume higher quantities of vitamin D than would be the case for normal weight populations,” they said.

"The key to a healthy body is not just one thing such as taking Vitamin D. You must incorporate alkaline eating and drinking, daily exercise, daily sunshine and/or 50,000 IU's of Vitamin D daily," states Dr. Robert O. Young, Director of the pH Miracle Living Center.

The Use of Mercury Will NO Longer Be Permitted In Sweden

Posted by thomenda7xx

The Government today decided to introduce a blanket ban on mercury. The ban means that the use of dental amalgam in fillings will cease and that it will no longer be permitted to place products containing mercury on the Swedish market. "Sweden is now leading the way in removing and protecting the environment from mercury, which is non-degradable. The ban is a strong signal to other countries and a Swedish contribution to EU and UN aims to reduce mercury use and emissions," says Minister for the Environment Andreas Carlgren.

The Government's decision means that products containing mercury may not be placed on the Swedish market. In practice this means that alternative techniques will have to be used in dental care, chemical analysis and the chloralkali industry. The Swedish Chemicals Agency will be authorized to issue regulations on exceptions or grant exemptions in individual cases.

In connection with the Government's decision, waste containing mercury will be disposed of in deep geological repositories in other EU countries. The Swedish market for hazardous waste is small. Last spring, a government inquiry established that there are existing repositories for waste containing mercury in, for example, Germany that more than adequately meet the safety requirements on which Swedish legislation is based. Creating a new Swedish repository would be around 15 times more expensive than depositing waste in existing facilities in the EU. The bodies consulted on this matter shared the inquiry's conclusion.

"By using common solutions and almost forty years of experience of storing mercury in the EU, we are not lowering safety standards. The waste will be transported to a deep geological repository with high safety standards. In accordance with the polluter pays principle, the owners of the waste will be responsible for ensuring that disposal in a repository is arranged and paying for it," says Mr Carlgren.

The disposal possibilities in other EU countries provide better incentives for the desired development of safe, large-scale technologies to stabilize waste containing mercury. Since the beginning of the 1990s there has been a ban in Sweden on the manufacture and sale of certain products containing mercury, including thermometers and other measuring devices and electronic components. The new regulations enter into force on 1 June 2009.

Grapefruit Holds The Key to Reversing Diabetes and Obesity

Posted by thomenda7xx on Monday, August 24, 2009

A substance in grapefruit could prove to be the key to reversing acidity that leads to obesity and diabetes, according to a new Canadian study.

The substance, a flavonoid called "naringenin," is a naturally occurring alkaline compound in all citrus fruit, but especially in grapefruit, giving it its characteristic bitter taste.

Naringenin, found naturally in grapefruit, detoxes the liver and causes fat to be released instead of storing it, according to a study by Roberts Research Institute at the University of Western Ontario.

The study used two groups of mice that were fed a typical Western high-fat diet, a diet known to induce symptoms of metabolic syndrome, including obesity and diabetes. One group's diet, however, was treated with the alkaline compound found in grapefruit - naringenin.

The researchers found that the naringenin lowered elevations in tryclycerides and cholesterol, prevented the onset of insulin resistance, and otherwise normalized the metabolism of insulin. Also, the naringenin completely reprogrammed the livers of the mice so that excess fat was released rather than stored.

The "marked obesity that develops in these mice was completely prevented by naringenin," said study leader Murray Huff. "What was unique about the study was that the effects were independent of caloric intake, meaning the mice ate exactly the same amount of food and the same amount of fat. There was no suppression of appetite or decreased food intake, which are often the basis of strategies to reduce weight gain and its metabolic consequences."

People wanting to try naringenin for obesity and diabetes can benefit from eating ruby red grapefruit. In fact, I personally guarantee that you will love the organic ruby red grapefruit we grow at the Rancho del Sol, in sunny San Diego, California.

Give them a try by ordering a box of freshly picked ruby red grapefruit today and we will ship them directly to your home.

Carbon Dioxide Causes Varicose Veins and Deep Tissue Thrombosis

Posted by thomenda7xx on Saturday, August 22, 2009

It is rare when you get a "gift" like the appended article.

The article is GREAT collateral reinforcement to my teachings on the devastating effects of all of the Colas, etc., in the modern diet, introducing an almost unbelievable Carbon Dioxide (CO2) insult to the body. It is basic scientific knowledge that CO2 dissolved in water is carbonic acid, and that all acids (environmental, diet or metabolic) irritate and inflame the linings of both veins and arteries....in fact, all healthy tissue.

I have warned you for years that excess acid (environmental, dietary or metabolic acid) causes every dis-ease or so-called disease we experience.

The following article refers to using a Carbon Dioxide (CO2) "foam" to irritate the linings of veins (collapsing the veins) that have become thrombic (varicose).

No thought is given to the fact that it is the excess carbon dioxide (carbonic toxic acid) intake that caused the varicose vein conditions to begin with!

The lesson to be learned from the appended article is: CARBON DIOXIDE IS A TOXIC ACID THAT IRRITATES HEALTHY TISSUES, CAUSING IRRITATION AND INFLAMMATION AND DESTROYING HEALTHY TISSUE AND YOUR HEALTH, e.g., Atherosclerosis, Neurological dis-eases, and a broad spectrum of so-called "wasting" diseases all caused by dietary and/or metabolic acid - including acidic vaccines, antibiotics, recreational drugs, Pharma drugs, enzymes and probiotics.

Eliminating acidic carbonated beverages out of your diet, is a major step in reducing the daily dietary carbon dioxide load in the body...then if you add in alkalizing exercise, breathing and dietary regimens, you will go a long way towards curtailing the damaging effects of excess carbon dioxide (carbonic toxic acid) CO2 concentrations on healthy human or animal tissue.

Washing Away Varicose Veins

August 21, 2009

PHOENIX (Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Experts estimate 50 percent of Americans over age 50 have varicose veins. For women -- and men -- they can be embarrassing, ugly, and even so painful it's hard to walk. Now, there's a new treatment option that uses foam to wash away problem veins.

Bulging and painful, Carol Albin used to suffer from painful varicose veins in her legs.

"There was an area that was really big and red, and I called it an explosion," Albin told Ivanhoe.

Fixing painful varicose veins used to mean invasive surgery called vein stripping, or laser treatments. A less invasive option uses detergent -- or foam -- to destroy the veins. Doctors inject the carbon dioxide foam deep into the diseased vein and track it through ultrasound. The foam pushes blood out of the way, eventually closing up the vein.

"It is a chemical, toxic agent to the wall of the vein, so basically what you're doing is you're irritating the inner lining of the vein," Rajagopalan Ravi, M.D., a vascular surgeon at the Arizona Heart Institute in Phoenix, Ariz., told Ivanhoe.

Doctors say using foam means better long-term results, especially for patients who have already had vein procedures.

"It is actually more effective, because you might need less treatment and a smaller quantity of the medicine, and thereby fewer complications," Dr. Ravi said.

Soon after her procedure, Albin was walking comfortably.

"After the surgery, I stayed off the treadmill for just a couple of weeks, and then I went back to it," she said. "The surgery made a big difference because it made the pain go away."

Now, Albin is stepping out with confidence.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and generally takes 15 to 20 minutes. Patients with asthma or migraines carry a higher risk of complications. It's covered by most medical insurance carriers if it's performed for medical reasons -- not cosmetic.
